Contact me: I appreciate your feedback! Please let me know your experiences learning jazz piano and tell me if this page has been useful to you.  It is fun to hear from jazz piano enthusiasts around the world. You can reach me at geoff@gpeters.com

On another note, if you would like to use these recordings for some kind of academic or research purpose, the answer will be "yes" but please contact me first. I am interested in seeing if someone can write a computer program to analyze how I practice!

A project to record and share my piano practices on the Internet, in a musical journal format. Hopefully if you are trying to learn jazz piano this page will give you some ideas.

About

Playing the piano is a serious (and enjoyable!) interest of mine. I am an avid student of jazz piano with many years of classical training. I play in several bands (including a jazz trio which performs at weddings and in restaurants, a folk contradance band, and previously as accompanist for a choir). I am taking private lessons from a local professional jazz player. I should be practicing more than I am now.

Here is my idea - I will record all (or most) of my practice sessions on my digital keyboard in MIDI format. I will then publish them on my web site.

I'm hoping that this will encourage me to practice more. Although the effect on how I practice will be interesting to observe. I will try my best to ignore the fact that I am recording the practices. I am basically giving up my artistic privacy, like a painter who publishes all his/her sketchbooks.  Through this process, I will be creating a journal of my musical exploration. However, I am also opening up all my raw composing ideas for anyone who cares to listen. If you're interested in ideas for how to practice piano, especially jazz piano practice, this page might be useful to you.

This page might be interest to someone learning to play piano, or it might not. Remember that I have been playing piano since I was five years old. I am in my mid twenties now. What I think would be really neat is if owners of Yamaha Disklavier pianos started downloading my practice files and playing them on their real acoustic pianos. However, as I will mention below, my practices are not always pleasant on the ears!

Disclaimer

Perhaps if you've never studied music you don't realize the huge difference between practice and performance. If you've come to hear samples of my piano to judge what I sound like when I perform, I suggest you listen to my Jazz Trio Mp3 Demos instead. Practicing is partly about exploring new ideas, taking risks, and going off on tangents. It's also about drilling stuff into your brain and repeating things until they sound good. Another important part of practicing is technique. Technique (scales, chords, and exercises) sounds quite boring to listen to. Practicing is also about making lots of mistakes and fixing them. This process is sometimes painful and takes a long time. In performance, a goal is to play a variety of techniques to create an interesting harmonic and melodic flow. However, in practice, I often focus on a single technique for a long time, to help improve my skill at that technique. This means that the practice often becomes very boring and even unbearable to listen to. However, there are a few moments throughout each practice where I hit on something kind of neat. I guess that by listening to them later I might be able to bring back some sort of inspiration.

My current style of practicing is not very disciplined (as you will find out). I try to enjoy myself (at least a little!) during a practice, and try out new things. That's a big difference from how I used to practice when I was studying classical pieces, which involved repeating a few bars of a piece over and over until I got it perfect.

I've also provided lead sheets for some of my original compositions.

The Recordings

I've recorded the practices in Midi format. The quality of the recording will vary depending on what kind of synthesizer your computer is using. I recommend you download Winamp music player

A Note to Yamaha Disklavier and Pianodisc Piano Owners

I'm offering many hours of my jazz piano practicing to you, free, whatever that is worth anyways! All my practices are free to download and play on your piano at home. If you have a Yamaha Disklavier or Pianodisk piano, copy these files to a disk and pop it into your piano's disk drive. Or you can hook the piano up to your computer and use MIDI software such as Cakewalk to play the midi files through that.

Some older Disklavier or Pianodisc models can only play MIDI files which are of Midi Format "1". I've marked the files which are encoded with Midi Format 1 with the symbol [1] which immediately follows the filename (on most of the most recent practices at the bottom of the page).

If you are having trouble playing these files on your Disklavier or Pianodisk piano, please send me an email at gpeters@sfu.ca and I would be more than happy to help.

How to Play these Files without a Disklavier or Pianodisc

You can play them on any computer which has a MIDI Synthesizer. However, the quality of the playback will depend on how good your synthesizer is. The synthesizer that comes on most Windows and Macintosh computers is good enough to get the idea, but it may just sound bad because of the quality of the synthesizer. If you're using a PC, I suggest using Winamp to play the files, because it comes with its own Software Midi Synthesizer which does a pretty nice job of playing these free MIDI files to download.

Also, if you're a jazz student who is using these files to fool your parents into thinking you are practicing, I would love to hear from you (and yes, I won't give your secret away!).

Files sound best with Winamp music player.

Jan 3, 2005 From the 26 Dec 2004 to Jan 1 2005, I was hiking in the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA with my family. It was a guided tour by Four Seasons Outfitters and Guides. We spent 4 days actually in the Canyon, hiking down to Phantom Ranch, where we spent 2 nights and at Indian Gardens where we spent 1 night. We also were in Las Vegas for about a day. The result was that I was not able to play the piano for about 7 days (gasp!), except for the piano at the Radisson Hotel in Flagstaff, AZ. So as soon as I got back I had to catch up and spent a lot of time getting to know the keyboard again. Much of this was done on an acoustic piano but I did some on my electric too, which is recorded here. when-you-wish-star-practice-after-grand-canyon.mid [1]

July 21, 2005 More work on Once I Loved. The reason for the long break in between recordings was because I attended a conference in Pittsburgh PA, on Artificial Intelligence. Although I didn't stop playing during that break... I did get to play the beautiful grand pianos at the Westin Conference Centre while I was there... and one night at around 1:00am I gave a performance for just me, and a hotel staff person who was vacuuming the conference floor. He was too polite to say anything and continued turning on and off the vacuum while I was playing ,but I figured out what key the vacuum was humming in, and improvised some music around it. It was fun. That hotel (Westin Pittsburgh) is where all the celebrities stay when they visit Pittsburgh and one night I was playing at the keyboard and some seemingly very rich lady appeared and stood staring at me and the piano for a good ten minutes, before commenting that "You are not a bad player" and walking out to her limousine. once-i-loved-practice3.mid

August 17, 2005 Latest work on an original called Sunshine, which I co-wrote with Angela N.. I will have to make a note to be sure with Angela that it's ok to post these kinds of recordings in the future. August 17, 2005 Another Angela-Geoff original. Some ideas for it anyways, as we're still working on the song. My view is that posting these kinds of low-fi recordings can only serve to inspire other upcoming musicians, and maybe even attract more interest in our music in case we get famous. take-this-ideas.mid

September 14, 2005 Working on the jazz standard I Got Rhythm. The reason I chose to work on this tune was because I received a very cool email from Vladimir Zivanovic, who is finishing his MBA in composition and orchestration at Music Academy in Novi Sad (Serbia and Montenegro). He suggested that I try to expand/extend my left hand a bit more, so I kept that in mind as I was practicing. A big shout out from Vancouver Canada to Vlada and his band, NS JAZZ QUINTET. His email made me realize what a small place the Internet has made the world become. What is better than receiving jazz tips from an expert musician on a different continent!  i-got-rhythm-practice-e1.mid

It would be great deal of help to many of your practice fans to hear your process of internalizing this very wicked piece of music and how you whip it into submission. By the way, I am an Alto Saxophonist, but have benefited greatly from your bravery and honesty thus far.

GP response:

Wow, good suggestion. I never thought myself good enough to tackle it yet, after hearing with awe the folks from the "advanced" group of my jazz camp talk about it when I was attending eight years ago.  But I have been learning a lot since then and I thought I'd give it a try. I first started just reading the chart and playing around with it and then I started to internalize it. I figured out a device that would help me remember the progression. The "Giant Step" part goes from the I to the flat three, to the sharp five, to the major seventh and then to the major third. I just visualized a weird chord with these notes,.The chords alternate between major and dominant for that part. So I just kept that in mind and if I ever forgot what was next I just worked it out using these rules. From bar 8 and onwards it is much easier, just 2 5 1's which I am much more familiar with.

Here is tonight's short practice. I will work on it more hopefully this week. I seem to be making progress and it is encouraging.

A nice letter from a visitor... Dear Geoff,

I love your style and had to send you a thank you for your web site.

I am trying to learn to play the piano and your site has helped my so much with my studies.

So I just thought you would like to know that  your work is valued and used and loved by many here in cyberspace.

I have played the sax for years but now the piano has opened up a whole new window of expression for me.

It was your site and encouragement at the web site that got me to go out and buy a piano and start to play.

So - thank you so much for all that you have done for those of us who you have never known or met.

Yours truly,

Jonathan Galente
