Discussion: How is your mood today? Are you feeling happy or sad? A recent article by the BBC called "The Science of Happiness" discusses how different researchers around the world have tried to study the concept of human happiness and find out what it is that makes people happy. Professor Ed Diener is quoted as saying that simply asking people how happy they are (such as on this site), "produces real answers that are valid, they're not perfect but they're valid and they predict all sorts of real things in their lives." Another researcher, Professor Daniel Kahneman, has determined that, "richer countries do tend to be happier than poor ones, but once you have a home, food and clothes, then extra money does not seem to make people much happier." According to the article, there are a set of "ingredients" which are vital to happiness: family and friends, meaning in life, and meaningful and enjoyable goals. The article also lists several things which can produce lasting unhappiness, such as loss of a spouse, or loss of a job.
